SPBC Headingley lies just off the A660 in Headingley. It is almost opposite the Headingley cricket and rugby grounds.
From the South, leave the M1 at junction 47 and drive into the centre of Leeds (1 mile). Follow signs for "Loop Traffic" until you see a sign for the Universities, or for the A660 Otley and Ilkley. Past the Leeds Metropolitan University and then Leeds University on your left and then on 1.5 miles to the shopping centre of Headingley.
At traffic lights turn left onto North Lane (s.p. Kirkstall) and South Parade Baptist Church is on your right after 400 metres. From the north, travel to the intersection of the A660 and the A6120 (Leeds Ring Road). Then south towards Leeds City centre on the A660. After 1.2 miles North Lane is on the left at traffic lights (s.p. "Kirkstall"), just after Safeway's supermarket on the left. South Parade Baptist Church is on your right after a quarter of a mile.
HISTORY
South Parade Baptist Church, Headingley was established in the middle of Leeds in 1779, and there is still a street in the business sector which bears this name. At the beginning of this century the city site was sold, and two daughter churches were planted in the rapidly growing residential areas to the North of Leeds.
At this time, most of the existing suburban housing in Headingley was still to be built. One of the first buildings to be erected was the new "Baptist Cathedral", and the road on which it was built was named South Parade. |
